FP7 programme line: Cooperation – Energy

Call identifier: FP7-ENERGY-2010-1

Publication date: 30 July 2009

Deadline 1st stage: 15 October 2009 at 17:00

Funding scheme: collaborative project

Call topic: cross-sectoral approach of the development of very large offshore wind turbines

Consortium: private enterprises from Austria, USA, Germany; research institutes from Netherlands, Germany; universities from Austria, Great Britain, Germany;

Abstract

An Austrian company active in the development of complete wind turbine design and the electrical systems is preparing a proposal in the FP7. The company leads a consortium with partners from enterprises, research institutes and universities. The aim of the project is the development and demo of a 10MW class of wind turbine with a special generator. The consortium is searching for a company with special expertises in offshore foundation for harsh environment industrial developments.

Objectives / scope of work:

The overall objective of the proposal is to develop, validate and test technologies for a 10 MW wind turbine with a direct drive generator utilizing high-temperature superconducting wire technology, which will be an enabling technology for offshore wind power. The work proposed includes theoretical studies on and the design of all WEC components as well as prototyping and testing of selective component.

Expected impact:

Offshore wind energy carries many advantages such as more regular high intensity wind regimes leading to larger electricity production potential from the wind turbines. In addition, some of the constraints related to land-based wind turbines can be relaxed such as noise and visual impacts once the turbines are installed far from the coast. This will allow better use of the huge potential of offshore wind energy with large and robust wind turbines and will bring down today high cost of offshore wind power for massive deployment.

The active participation of stakeholders involved in harsh environment industrial developments is essential to achieve the full impact of the projects.

The consortium is looking urgently for a partner with special expertise in offshore foundation in harsh environment. The 1st state deadline for submission the proposal is the 15 October 2009.

The proposal is in preparation and one specific partner is need to complete the proposal.
